Values
Our Values as a Community
Behind the Zion Curtain Cabaret has been described as "aggressively inclusive."
We encourage self-expression, anti-censorship, meeting people where they're at, and maintaining a safe space for everybody. Each of our shows is full of acts inspired by taglines that approach concepts anywhere from our political climate to cathartic silliness.
We prioritize accessibility.
We are as accessible as we have the resources to be, and work on finding more ways to incorporate accessibility. Currently, we have a collection of raised- and ground-level stages to accommodate multiple physical needs, we book performers both with and without visible disabilities, and we're organized and run by autistic EDS-having Havoq Luscivia who structures the booking systems to be as predictable and tools-based as possible. The audience floor space is adjustable seating so wheelchairs can be anywhere in the room, and it is all on ground level with the entry and bathrooms. Our sound finds the balance between loud enough for the performers to hear their music and never so loud that it's auditorily painful to watch the show (and if we miss the mark on that, you always have the right to ask for loudness accommodation). We don't use strobes, we try to include content warnings for any sensitive subjects we approach, and we include written stage name signage with each performer. We also aim for the show to last no more than an hour with a 10 minute intermission half way through.

We accept any style acts, and include any type of human.
We accept any style from burlesque to drag to club-based stripping to aerial arts to sideshow to ballet, and our practices prioritize booking our queer community, performers with disabilities, people of color, and any body-having on-stage thing-doer, no matter what your body looks like. Our system is designed to spread performance opportunities (and workload) across the community in the most inclusive and sustainable ways we can. Our team releases applications for each show, and we organize the lineup based around diversity, balancing veteran performers with new faces, and saving space for people who have been structurally turned away from other shows. We feel like this strengthens the inclusive space created for our audience as well -- no matter who you are, as long as you respect our performers' boundaries, and as long as you're not transphobic, homophobic, or a Nazi, you're welcome here. And if you're none of those things but you're worried about not "knowing enough," don't worry at all -- we'll happily include you with acceptance and kindness and we have faith in your ability to catch on and enjoy the show. You don't have to understand the world or know a damn thing about inclusivity, all we need from you is your openness to attend our punk rock anti-censorship cabaret.
